:: Transplantation

Transplantation of the liver was first performed in man in 1963. Today, the UK performs approximately 600 - 700 liver transplants a year; the 10,000th operation took place in July 2004. There are seven transplant units in the UK, six in England and one in Scotland. Currently, the waiting time for low-risk patients in the UK is 6 - 12 months.

Each transplant centre will have a pre-transplant assessment process to evaluate the suitability of a patient for liver transplantation; this process is fairly consistent across the seven centres.

Five of the transplant centres currently have a web site, so do browse them for more information on the procedures involved and the information they provide for patients. These are the key specialist units and can provide the most appropriate and relevant information.

The UK Transplant Authority estimates that there were 3,400 liver transplants in the UK and Ireland between 1996 and 2000 inclusive.
• Alcohol was the highest cause with 468 transplants (following a standard six months abstinence period)
• Hepatitis C was the second highest with 430 transplants
• Primary Biliary Cirrhosis was the third highest with 420 transplants

The average survival for all transplants at one year was approximately 80%, though this varies between different patients, with different diseases.

Some useful internet sites on transplantation are as follows:
UK Transplant - is the Special Health Authority within the NHS with a UK-wide remit, and a key role is to ensure that donated organs are matched and allocated in a fair and unbiased way

The British Organ Donor Society or "BODY" - is a national charity which covers all issues related to organ transplantation in the UK
